The Four Corners area of New Mexico is considered Republican country but Democrats held a rally on Saturday to show that it's Indian Country too.

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson (D) joined Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr., National Congress of American Indians President Tex Hall and other Navajo leaders to show their support for the Democratic presidential ticket of Sen. John Kerry and Sen. John Edwards. Speakers at the rally in Shiprock said Kerry and Edwards will promote tribal sovereignty if elected to the White House.

Also last week, Vice President Dick Cheney visited the Four Corners where he was joined by Sen. Pete Domenici (R-New Mexico). At the rally in Farmington, Domenici said Navajo leaders were "out of touch" for supporting the Democrats.

Shirley and the Navajo Nation council endorsed Kerry for president.
