Young Indian women in Bolivia avoid traditional dress

Young Indian women in Bolivia say they don't want to wear the traditional attire of their mothers and grandmothers.

Some say the pollera, or skirt, and derby hat are not fashionable. To be successful, an Indian woman has to wear modern clothes, some say.

Others note that wearing a pollera and hat can be rather costly. Women usually wear a lot of jewelry with the outfit.

The pollera not a traditional Indian clothing, however. It was adopted after the Spaniards came to Bolivia because the skirt and hat were popular in Spain at the time.
