HUD warns Tulalip Tribes about misuse of housing funds

The Tulalip Tribes of Washington shut down its housing authority last week after the Department of Housing and Urban Development threatened to impose sanctions on the tribe.

The decision leaves the tribe without the ability to manage millions in federal funds. HUD has already been "editing" the tribe's grant applications and recently rejected three out of eight requests, according to The Everett Herald.

HUD warned the tribe that its housing authority has not been in compliance with federal law. Chairman Stan Jones Sr. acknowledged problems but said the money has not been wasted. A HUD spokesperson said criminal charges are possible.
