Michigan college starts new Indian law program

The Michigan State University College of Law has started a new American Indian Law Program.

The school created the program to help prepare students for careers in Indian law. The director is Professor Donald Laverdure, a member of the Crow Tribe of Montana. He says high school students learn about city, state and national governments but not tribal ones.

"There's never a tribal government 101 part of the course," he tells The State News.

Michigan has 12 federally recognized tribes.
