Senate approves expansion of hate-crimes law

The Senate voted 65-33 to authorize an expansion of the 1968 hate crimes law to include offenses based on sexual orientation, gender and disabilities.

The provision was approved as an amendment to the Defense appropriations bill. Supporters added to the "must pass" measure in hopes of getting it through the House, where a similar tactic was rejected in 2000.
