Students visit site of 1863 Chippewa treaty

Students participating in the INMED Summer Institute at the University of North Dakota got a lesson in history on Sunday.

UND professor Virgil Benoit took the students to Old Crossing Treaty Park. In 1863, the Red Lake and Pembina bands of Chippewa went there to negotiate a treaty.

Benoit discussed the four days of talks between the tribes and the U.S. He said the tribes were told they had to allow non-Indian settlers on their homelands. The treaty opened up 3 to 11 million acres of land, for which the tribes were paid $510,000.

The Indians into Medicine (INMED) program seeks to increase the number of Indian students in the medical field.
