Cherokee Nation takes language seriously

The Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma is trying to ensure the Cherokee language is preserved by future generations.

Students at an elementary school learn Cherokee in an immersion class where English isn't allowed. The tribe's online courses are so popular that they are booked, said principal chief Chad Smith.

Fewer than 1 percent of the tribe is fluent in the language, according to a recent survey.
