The Northwest Area Foundation has started a leadership program to improve economic conditions in nine reservation communities.
As part of the program, the foundation selected two tribal colleges and one tribal organization. Each grantee will receive nearly $1.1 million to "coach" three reservation communities to reduce poverty, combat unemployment and develop economic opportunities.
The "community clusters" selected are:
Little Eagle, Kenel, and Bear Soldier/McLaughlin on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in South Dakota. To be coached by Sitting Bull College.
The Hoh River Tribe, Elwha Klallam Tribe and Quileute Tribe of Washington. To be coached by the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians Economic Development Corporation.
Arlee, Hot Springs, and Elmo on Flathead Reservation in Montana. To be coached by Salish Kootenai College.
