Column: Designs for Indian school 'stunning'

Whitney Gould of The Minneapolis Journal-Sentinel praises the designs of the new Indian Community School outside of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

New Mexico architect Antoine Predock was selected for the $35 million project. He has incorporated tribal elements into the design "without resorting to stereotypes and literal-minded imagery," Gould says.

Predock worked with Chris Cornelius, member of the Oneida Nation who is also an architect. "Our culture is not in-your-face; it's about stories and how each individual interprets them. Presenting them through architecture should be done not by representation but by translation," Cornelius tells Gould. The design includes symbols of the Oneida, Menomonee and Stockbridge-Munsee tribes of Wisconsin.

The school will serve about 400 Indian students from kindergarten through eighth grade.
