Indian dance troupe going strong after 17 years

When the American Indian Dance Theatre was formed in 1987, the troupe thought its first performance would be the last.

But 17 years later, the group has toured the world, appeared on television and has received an Emmy and a Grammy nomination for its unique performances that blend traditional elements with modern. Hanay Geiogamah, a Delaware/Kiowa man from Oklahoma who is one of the founders, says the cast likes to bring fresh ideas to the stage while still respecting tradition.

Representing several tribes from the U.S. and Canada, the troupe is performing at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts in St. Paul, Minnesota, on Sunday.
