New Mexico tribes oppose road through petroglyphs

Leaders of New Mexico's Pueblo tribes on Tuesday reiterated their opposition to a road extension that would cut through the Petroglyph National Monument.

The tribes say the development, which was authorized by Congress, would destroy sacred petroglyphs dating back 12,000 years. The monument is located on Albuquerque's west side.

The city council held the first of two public forums on the proposed extension last night. According to The Albuquerque Journal, opponents of the project outnumbered supporters 3 to 1. Speakers criticized the effect on the monument.
