N.D. tribe's bison crew rejects mismanagement claims

Employees of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation say allegations of neglect and mismanagement of the tribe's bison herd are untrue.

The herd has been questioned for the past two years with reports of malnutrition and winter deaths. But buffalo crew workers say the buffalo have been well fed despite claims by a former employee who got into a fight with a crew manager.

Tribal chairman Tex Hall says the complaints have been politically motivated. He was accused of using equipment from the tribal ranch at his own property.

The tribe acknowledges some animals have died but no more than the usual winter deaths. The herd is culled from excess animals from the National Park Service.
