Navajo Nation may lower blood quantum requirement

The enrollment of the Navajo Nation will double under a proposed change to the tribe's blood quantum standard.

The Navajo Nation council is being asked to lower the minimum requirement from one-fourth to one-eighth. According to The Gallup Independent, this will increase enrollment to almost 600,000 people.

The Navajo Nation is the largest tribe in the country by enrollment. The Cherokee Nation is the largest under the 2000 U.S. Census, which is based on self-identification.

The blood quantum issue is one of many the council will consider at its spring session, which begins today and runs through Friday.
