A trial into Indian voting rights in South Dakota heard from five Indian witnesses who testified of racism they experienced.

The suit accuses the state of packing the Pine Ridge and Rosebud reservations into one legislative district. The American Civil Liberties Union says the practice violates federal law and discriminates against Indian voters.

The five witnesses included lead plaintiff Alfred Bone Shirt and other tribal members. The state questioned whether they have been denied the right to vote or the right to participate in the political process.
