Trial into Indian voting rights in South Dakota continues

Two witnesses in a trial over Indian voting rights in South Dakota testified in favor of separate voting districts for the Pine Ridge and Rosebud reservations.

Currently, the reservations are grouped into one large district. The American Civil Liberties Union says this "packing" violates federal law. $ Former state Sen. Tom Shortbull testified that she recommended separate districts back in the 1970s when she served as senior staff for the person for a state-tribal relations task force. Current state Senate candidate Theresa Two Bulls testified of obstacles in registering Indians to vote.

Shortbull and Two Bulls were witnesses for the ACLU. The state is expected to present its defense next week.
