Alaska Native firm's spraying plans condemned

An Alaska Native village corporation plans to spray corporation land with herbicides over the objections of local tribes, environmentalists and other groups.

Klukwan Inc. is asking for a state permit to use the with herbicides glyphosate and imazapyr to treat the land. The chemicals kill brush and encourage growth of timber the corporation can harvest.

The Hydaburg Tribe reiterated its opposition last week by passing a resolution against the proposal. Other tribes have opposed in the past.

Klukwan's first permit was rejected but new regulations may lead to approval.
