Single mother leads Native corporation to success


As a corporate executive, Helvi Sandvik doesn't find that being a single mother or a woman has held her back.

Sandvik, 46, is president of NANA Development Corp. She says the Alaska Native corporation has a goal of becoming a $1 billion company. Right now, she says revenues are about $265 million. The corporations owns the Red Dog mine, the world's largest zinc mine.

Sandvik was raised with both her Native and Scandinavian heritages. She spent her youth with her mother's Native family.
