The Navajo Nation supports protection of the sacred San Francisco Peaks but is not advocating a boycott of the city of Flagstaff, President Joe Shirley Jr. said.

At a rally last Friday to protest a snowmaking plan in the peaks, an aide called for a boycott. Shirley said the aide spoke on her own and did not represent his administration's official position.

Some Navajos support the boycott because Flagstaff has agreed to sell reclaimed wastewater to a ski area in the peaks. The Navajo Nation, the Hopi Tribe and several other tribes oppose the proposal.
