Editorial: Wise move to keep Pine Ridge alcohol ban

The Oglala Sioux tribal council acted "responsibly" in rejecting a proposed referendum that would have legalized alcohol on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, The Madison Daily Leader says in an editorial.

The paper says legitimizing the sale of alcohol "makes no sense at all." The paper cites alcoholism, fetal alcohol syndrome, domestic violence and unemployment as problems caused by alcohol abuse.

"The tribe still has a long way to go to battle alcohol on the reservation, but at least they didn't take a step backward," the paper says.
