Arctic Slope shareholders seek accountability

A petition seeking greater accountability is circulating among the 9,000 shareholders of Arctic Slope Regional Corporation.

ASRC reports more than $1 billion in revenues a year and is one of the state's most wealthy corporations. But some shareholders question how their money is being spent and why more profits aren't going to shareholders.

ASRC is one of the supporters of drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Its executives enjoy close ties with Gov. Frank Murkowski (R), who appointed an ASRC representative to a top post, and Sen. Ted Stevens (R), who recently authored a rider treating Alaska Native corporations as tribes even though they lack any type of sovereign or governmental status.
