Obituary: Plume, first female superintendent for BIA


Shirley Plume, a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota and the first female superintendent for the Bureau of Indian Affairs, died on Tuesday. She was 83.

Plume was superintendent on the Standing Rock Reservation from 1974 until her retirement in 1978. After that, she went onto serve three terms on the Oglala Sioux tribal council in the late 1980s and early 1990s. She also held several positions within the tribe.
