Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry took an impressive 37.6 percent of the vote in the Iowa caucuses on Monday.

Kerry, the senator from Massachusetts, beat out Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina, who had 31.8 percent of the votes. Trailing was former Vermont governor Howard Dean, who placed third with 18 percent. Rep. Dick Gephardt of Missouri had 10.6 percent and effectively said he would drop his campaign.

Retired Army general Wesley Clark, who, like Dean, is gaining support in Indian Country, did not participate in the Iowa race. He is running in the January 27 New Hampshire primaries, where Kerry, Edwards and Dean are focusing their attentions.
