First Nations on both sides of the Alberta-Saskatchewan border are moving forward with casino developments.

The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations recently agreed to pursue a casino on the Saskatchewan side of Lloydminister. On the Alberta side, the Frog Lake First Nation is seeking its own development.

Of the two projects, Frog Lake's seems to be more ambitious. Plans call for a casino, hotel, conference center and a Western Hockey League arena at a 140-acre site.

"This venture will be a win-win for both First Nation and other regional communities that creates business development, economic diversification, and hundreds of new jobs," the band said in a press release touting the $100 million ($76.8M US) development.

The Saskatchewan proposal isn't as large although it also includes a casino and a hotel. The Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority estimates a $20 million ($15.36 US) investment.

Both projects would be located along the Highway 16, which runs east-west through Lloydminster.
