The Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation is the latest tribe to sign a new Class III gaming compact with Gov. Jerry Brown (D).

The agreement updates the compact that was signed in 1999. Chairman Cody Martinez said it will help the tribe remain on solid financial ground.

"The new compact represents a respectful, government to government negotiation that mutually benefits the state, tribe, and local community," Martinez told The Times of San Diego.

The deal comes as lawmakers ratified a new compact for the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians and another one for the United Auburn Indian Community. More agreements are expected in the coming weeks.

“I think he’s an honest man and an individual who certainly lives up to his word,” Chumash Chairman Vincent Armenta told KQED of the governor.
