The Navajo Nation Council passed a bill last week to impose a tax on alcohol sold at tribal gaming facilities.

Revenues from the 3.25 percent tax will be placed into “The Division of Public Safety Alcohol Tax Fund." The money will be used to combat drunken driving on the reservation.

“These funds will be used for sobriety checkpoints in each police district on the Navajo Nation. It is going to send a message to individuals that are drinking and driving that our Navajo Police will be out on weekends and holidays to conduct sobriety checkpoints,” Delegate Edmund Yazzie, who sponsored Legislation No. 0084-15, said in a press release.

If President Russell Begaye signs the bill into law, the tribe could start collecting the taxes on October. The tax is expected to generate $73,000 a year.

The tribe sells liquor at the Twin Arrows Navajo Casino Resort in Flagstaff, Arizona. Liquor is not sold at the tribe's facilities in New Mexico.
