Members of the Red Lake Nation in Minnesota will go to the polls next month to determine whether the tribe should sell alcohol at its gaming facilities.

The outcome of the August 19 referendum will be binding on the tribe. If voters approve, liquor will be sold at the Seven Clans Casino in Thief River Falls and another in Warroad.

A third facility in Red Lake will not be covered because it is considered to be a part of the reservation that was diminished. "Therefore, alcohol would not be allowed on the Red Lake Reservation nor would it be served at the Seven Clans Casino Red Lake." Secretary Donald Cook said.

In November 1999, tribal members rejected a proposal to sell alcohol inThief River Falls and Warroad. But that vote was only advisory, Cook noted.

"The outcome of an advisory vote is not binding on the tribal council to enact a law or constitutional amendment," Cook said.

Next month's election, on the other hand, will be binding.
