The Muscogee National Council is holding another emergency session tonight to consider a vote of no confidence against Chief George Tiger for his involvement in a controversial casino deal. Council members already asked Tiger to resign after they learned he was paid $31,500 to promote a casino for the Kialegee Tribal Town. That vote was symbolic so now they are considering another resolution in hopes of getting him to step down. Meanwhile, tribal members filed a removal petition against Tiger. Organizers need to gather least 3,290 signatures -- or 20 percent of registered voters -- within 60 days. If they are successful, it will be up to the council to hold impeachment proceedings. It would take a three-fourths vote -- or 12 of the 16 members -- to remove Tiger. Twelve council members already voted to ask Tiger to step down. The resolution being considered tonight has 13 sponsors. Tiger has defended his decision to sign the deal, saying he made it as a private citizen in November 2009. However, an investigation by The Tulsa World showed that he accepted checks after being sworn into the council in early 2010. The final payment came in September 2011. Two months later, Tiger won election as chief of the tribe and eventually came out against the Kialegee casino. "I can state categorically that I have acted at all times in accordance with our constitution and the best interests of ALL Creek citizens," Tiger wrote in a letter to tribal members. Tiger was receiving a leadership award from the National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development when the council held its first vote. He is due to speak about tribal leadership issues at Kansas State University next Tuesday. Get the Story:
