Pottawatomi Indians of Michigan, also known as the Gun Lake Tribe, is expanding its police department.
The tribe has three officers on duty. They mainly provide service to the Gun Lake Casino but they are also starting to work on other parts of the reservation.
“Having a police force is a bedrock of tribal government. It’s a way for us to protect our sovereignty and exert our sovereignty,” Amanda Sprague, the tribal court administrator, told The Allegan County News. “This is my tribe and you can really feel a great sense of pride when you go to the casino and see our officers out there keeping the community safe.”
The tribe plans to hire another officer, the paper said.
