Pinoleville Pomo Nation planning for casino with new compact

The Pinoleville Pomo Nation of California is still in the planning stages for a casino on its reservation.

But one hurdle has been cleared. The tribe signed a new Class III gaming compact with Gov. Jerry Brown (D) that appears to address concerns that were raised by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

In March 2010, the Obama administration rejected an earlier version of the compact that was negotiated by former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (R). The BIA said the state failed to make a "meaningful concession" in exchange for share of gaming revenues.

The new deal still requires revenue sharing but the money will go to local communities instead of the state.And a provision that required an extra fee for more slot machines appears to have been eliminated.

Brown has negotiated two Class III gaming compacts since taking office in January. Both were for tribes whose prior deals were rejected by the BIA.
