Jamul Band demolishes homes to make way for casino

The Jamul Band of Kumeyaay Indians demolished the homes of long-time residents of the reservation in order to make way for a casino.

Chairman Leon Acebedo had promised not to destroy the homes of Walter Rosales and Karen Toggery until March 16 so they could file lawsuits in state and federal court. But the tribal council overrode Acebedo and brought in bulldozers. In total, four homes were demolished.

Rosales and Toggery are Kumeyaay Indians but aren't enrolled in the Jamul Band. They challenged the tribe's elections and leadership but lost a case in federal court last week [Order | Opinion].

The tribe plans to build a $350 million casino on the 6-acre reservation. Plans for a casino at a nearby off-reservation casino site were dropped.
