Michigan tribe sues over Indian land determination

The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians of Michigan filed a lawsuit against the Interior Department over the Indian land status of its new casino.

The tribe spent $36 million on the Kewadin Shores Casino and Hotel. But since parts of the facility were built on land taken into trust after 1988, Interior said gaming wasn't legal under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.

Without a favorable Indian land determination, the tribe cannot engage in gaming at the site. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Michigan, seeks to force a decision.
