"I thought I could at least hold out a year not writing about casinos — that was my resolution. Seems I can't last nine months.

Not after reading a letter to the editor that made its way into the Times Herald-Record and the weeklies, describing the "fast-tracking" of a casino in Sullivan County.

That took me aback.

I've heard many words used to describe the potential over the last 30 years for casino gaming in the Catskills. Fast-tracking has never been among them.

In three decades worth of casino talk — we've yet to spin a single roulette wheel, deal a hand of blackjack or toss dice at a craps table. That should make anyone question the notion of gaming being "fast-tracked" in Sullivan.

Allowing Sullivan County to have one casino, at a location less than a mile off Route 17, at a site that for decades has promoted gambling at a harness track and now also at a racino, would seem to have the least environmental and social impact of any plan in any area proposed in the last 10 years.

Study time is over. It's time to build."
