Sycuan Band compact allows for second casino
Wednesday, September 13, 2006 More from this date
The Sycuan Band of Kumeyaay Indians could open a second casino under the compact signed with California Gov. Arnold Schwarznegger. The compact has not been ratified by state lawmakers or sent to the Bureau of Indian Affairs for approval. But it would allow a second casino on 1,600 acres adjacent to the reservation. Before that happens, though, the tribe has to step through a lot of hoops. The tribe owns all the land but none of it is held in trust. The first 1,200 acres sit next to the reservation. The 400-acre parcel is occupied by the Sycuan Golf Resort and is adjacent to the 1,200-acre parcel. The tribe hasn't filed any applications to have the parcels placed in trust. But it's always been a goal of the tribe, said a tribal attorney. Get the Story:
