The Bureau of Indian Affairs is publishing a draft environmental assessment on the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe's off-reservation casino.

The tribe is seeking to acquire 30 acres in the Catskills for the casino. The site is about 380 miles from the reservation.

The draft EA will be available for public review. A notice of its availability is to be published in the Federal Register.

Three tribes are seeking casinos in the Catskills, about 90 minutes north of New York City. The Mohawks are the furthest along in the process.

Legislation pending in Congress would eliminate future off-reservation casinos. The Senate bill contains a clause to "grandfather" existing proposal like the Mohawk one while the House bill would block it entirely.
