A slight majority of Rhode Islanders oppose the Narragansett Tribe's proposed casino, according to a new Brown University poll.
Of survey respondents, 52 percent said they opposed changing the state constitution to authorize the casino. Only 39 percent supported the tribe's plan while 9 percent were undecided or gave no answer.
An overwhelming majority, two-thirds, said the process should have been open to competitive bidding. Donald Trump tried to get state lawmakers to include his casino plan in the mix.
The Narragansett Tribe is barred from engaging in gaming under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. The tribe needs to change state law in order to authorize a casino.
