Turtle Mountain Band weighs other casino sites

Tracking casino proposals across Indian Country.
The Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians wants to build an off-reservation casino in Grand Forks but other sites are possible if it doesn't work out, Chairman Ken Davis said.

The tribe filed a two-part determination application to open a casino in south Grand Forks. The process requires approval by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the state governor.

If that doesn't work out, Davis said the tribe has trust land elsewhere that could be used. A Class III casino would require an amendment to the tribal-state compact while a Class II facility would not.

The tribe already operates a casino on its reservation, as do other North Dakota tribes, who oppose the Grand Forks casino proposal.
