"You find the usual along with the unusual on the menu of Whispering Winds restaurant in Shooting Star Casino in Mahnomen.
Hominy and fry bread are among unusual side selections with entrees. There's a Buffalo Blanket on the menu, which is made with buffalo, sauteed onions, peppers, wild rice and Swiss cheese and all wrapped up in a cozy tortilla for $6.95. There's also a Shooting Star Colossal Dog - a quarter pound all-beef hot dog on a bun for $2.95. And the menu features a fry bread taco for $7.95.
We were looking for something more familiar when I had lunch in Whispering Winds in late March with Laura Jane Paulson (LJP) and Monica Larivee (ML). So, we ordered hot turkey dinners we found under the 55 Plus Selections. The dinner came with gravy over mashed potatoes, wild rice stuffing and vegetable of the day. It was all right, but we didn't realize we were getting pressed turkey meat or that the vegetable of the day would be canned peas. Still, it was a good buy at the price of $4.95.
LJP isn't crazy about pressed turkey, but she was OK with it and enjoyed the mid-day meal. ML thought the dressing had a nice flavor, and I liked the gravy. Bread sticks that came with the meal had a nice golden crust. Coffee (99 cents) had the best, fresh taste of any I have had in a cafe for a while."
