The city of Barstow, California, is expected to start negotiations with the Big Lagoon Rancheria for a casino services agreement.
The Big Lagoon Rancheria is one of three tribes seeking to build a casino in Barstow. The city has already signed agreements with the Los Coyotes Band, one of Big Lagoon's partners, and The Chemehuevi Tribe.
The Big Lagoon Rancheria and the Los Coyotes Band are based hundreds of miles away from Barstow. They are eyeing the city because it is located on a major interstate halfway between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. The tribes each signed a compact with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) for their casinos.
The Chemehuevi Tribe is closer to Barstow and claims ancestral and historic ties to the city.
