Morongo Band to meet over Schwarzenegger flap

The Morongo Band of Mission Indians is planning to meet with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's office to discuss the tribe's use of video lottery machines.

Earlier this month, a legal adviser to Schwarzenegger (R) sent a letter to the Morongo Band and the Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians. The letter said the tribes are violating their compacts by offering the devices in addition to slot machines.

Both tribes contend the video lottery machines are not slot machines. So they aren't breaking the compacts, which limit each tribe to 2,000 slot machines.

Copies of the letters from Schwarzenegger's office can be read at http://www.indianz.com/docs/schwarzenegger110404.pdf.
