Tribe gave $1.8M to group endorsing gaming bid

The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians donated $1.8 million to a conservative anti-tax group that endorsed the tribe's gaming proposition.

The tribe made the donation after Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association announced support for Proposition 70. Critics say the tribe "paid" for the endorsement.

Proposition 70 would allow willing tribes to offer more than 2,000 slot machines under 99-year compacts. In exchange, they would share 8.84 percent of net revenues with the state, the same rate corporations are taxed.

The majority of tribes have endorsed the initiative. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) is opposing it.
