Mille Lacs Band offers to negotiate gaming deal

The Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe is offering to negotiate a new compact with the state of Minnesota as long as the tribes' existing deals are not threatened.

Mille Lacs Chief Executive Melanie Benjamin said the new compact could include financing for a sports stadium. She said the tribe would like to offer more Class III games and share profits with the state.

Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R) earlier this said he wanted to renegotiate tribal-state compacts in order to get a "better deal" for the state. He said he welcomed the Mille Lacs Band's offer to talk.
