Arizona tribe calls gaming turning point in history

The Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation of Arizona says gaming marked a turnaround in its history.

In May 1992, the tribe defied state and federal authorities who tried to shut down the casino on the reservation. The 24-day standoff led to the first tribal-state gaming compacts.

The tribe celebrated the 12th anniversary of Sovereignty Day on Friday by highlighting the benefits of gaming. The tribe has used casino revenues for housing, health and to expand the reservation economy.
