Mich. tribe's casino plans scuttled by lawsuits

Two lawsuits have stalled casino plans for the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians of Michigan.

The tribe won approval from the Bureau of Indian Affairs to have 675 acres placed into trust. But a lawsuit by the Taxpayers of Michigan Against Casinos (TOMAC) has sent the decision back to the BIA.

TOMAC is responsible for a second lawsuit against the tribe's casino compact with the state. The Michigan Supreme Court held a hearing last week to consider whether the agreements are illegal without legislative approval. Four tribes in the state have casino plans or recently opened casinos.
