Election season kicked into high gear at the National Congress of American Indians, with a last-minute addition shaking up the field. 
The nation’s oldest and largest inter-tribal organization opened its annual convention with a competing set of messages about the challenges facing Indian Country.
A warrior. A friend. A mentor. A family man. Indian Country is remembering the late Ernie Stevens, Jr., who passed on at the age of 66.
“We lost a warrior today,” said NCAI President Mark Macarro.
‘Fight like hell’: Federal funding cuts threaten HIV/AIDS programs (September 8, 2025)
Advocates for Americans with HIV and their allies in Congress are vowing to “fight like hell” in the face of funding cuts that they say will cost lives. 
Native groups have hit back at President Donald Trump’s threat to block a new stadium for the Washington Commanders if the professional football team does not revert to its racist name.
“This legislation is meaningful progress in honoring the federal government’s obligations to Tribal Nations,” said President Mark Macarro.
“Any attempt to distract by invoking our names and purporting to speak for our communities is an affront to Tribal sovereignty and is not taken lightly,” said President Mark Macarro.
Republican lawmakers are pushing back against drastic cuts to Indian Country programs like law enforcement and school construction.
The vast majority of Native students attend schools funded through the Department of Education, the cabinet agency that President Donald Trump wants to shut down.
“This is not just an administrative change – it’s an attack on the fundamental right of Native students to a quality education that reflects their identity, history, and sovereignty,” said NCAI President Mark Macarro.
