Kevin Gover to take over NMAI on December 2

Kevin Gover, a member of the Pawnee Tribe of Oklahoma, will take over the National Museum of the American Indian on December 2.

Gover is the second person to lead the museum. He replaces Rick West, a member of the Cheyenne-Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma, who was the founding director.

Though he lacks a background in museums, Gover was picked over 10 other candidates. "I think he is perfect. He is very analytical about systems, management, how to run things," activist Suzan Shown Harjo told The Washington Post.

Gover ran the Bureau of Indian Affairs for the last three years of the Clinton administration. He left to work for a Washington, D.C., law and lobbying firm, but eventually became a professor at Arizona State University.
