The National Museum of the American Indian in New York is opening its newest exhibition and performance space on Saturday.
The Diker Pavilion for Native Arts and Cultures is located in the basement of the George Gustav Heye Center in Lower Manhattan. The 6,000-square foot pavilion features space for exhibits and performances.
The first exhibit is "Beauty Surrounds Us." Grace Gleuck of The New York Times says the objects in the collection "grab your attention when you enter.
"Representing cultures throughout the Western hemisphere, the clothing, tools, musical instruments, games and sports equipment, masks and pottery chosen for the exhibition, Beauty Surrounds Us, attest to the variety and vitality of native life," she writes.
The performance space will be used for dances, concerts and other events. Bill Miller and Pamuya are scheduled this fall.
