Residents of Seneca County, New York, are opposing a land claim settlement with the Cayuga Nation.
The tribe filed a 64,000-acre claim but lost in court. Gov. Eliot Spitzer (D), however, reached an agreement to limit the tribe's land-into-trust requests to 10,000 acres in Seneca and Cayuga counties and for a casino elsewhere in the state.
At a special meeting last night, critics said the deal was a waste of resources and would treat Indians differently than other citizens. Of the about 100 people who attended, at least a dozen carried signs that said "I am a Native American. I was born here and I pay taxes," The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reported.
