Former Sen. Conrad Burns (R-Montana), who lost re-election over his ties to convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff, has spent more than $150,000 this year for a criminal defense lawyer.
Burns hired the Powell Goldstein law firm last April amid reports that he was a subject of the Abramoff investigation. He accepted more money from Abramoff and Abramoff's clients than any other member of Congress.
As the scandal heated up, Burns repeatedly derided Abramoff in hopes of saving his campaign. But he lost to Sen. Jon Tester (D), who now sits on the Senate Indian Affairs Committee.
