Democrats in Montana want Sen. Conrad Burns (R-Montana) to return $137,000 in campaign contributions made by former tribal clients of disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff.
But a spokesperson for Burns said there's nothing to return. "It's all spent," the aide told The Bozeman Daily Chronicle.
Burns received the money after he helped the wealthy Saginaw Chippewa Tribe of Michigan, a former client of Abramoff's, obtain a $3 million appropriation under a program meant for poorer tribes. Burns has denied any wrongdoing and has hired a lawyer to clear his name.
