Anna Rondon is hoping to be the first Navajo mayor of Gallup, New Mexico.
Rondon is the only Navajo running for office in the border town. She was inspired to run by Della John, a Navajo woman whose son was shot and killed by police officers in Farmington last year.
If elected, Rondon said her first action would be to establish a human rights commission. She said racism still persists in subtle ways in Gallup.
Gallup is about one-third American Indian and Alaska Native.
